Common Pakistan-market scenarios
You bought a used ThinkPad T470, Latitude 7280, or EliteBook 840 G4
These are 7th-gen Intel (Kaby Lake) laptops — not on Microsoft's Windows 11 supported CPU list. Windows Update will refuse the upgrade. Two honest paths: (1) stay on Windows 10, which reached end of support in October 2025, so only paid extended updates continue, or (2) do a manual force-install using the well-documented registry bypass — the OS will usually run fine, but Microsoft does not promise updates on unsupported hardware. If Windows 11 is a hard requirement (a school or job mandate), look at a T480, Latitude 7290, or EliteBook 840 G5 instead; the table above shows what is in stock and at what price today.
You bought a used ThinkPad T480, Latitude 5490 or 7290, or EliteBook 840 G5
These are 8th-gen Intel (Coffee Lake / Whiskey Lake) — fully supported. A common issue is that TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot is switched off in the BIOS, for example after a reseller reset. Reboot into BIOS (usually F2 or F12 at boot), go to Security, enable Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT) and Secure Boot, save and exit. Windows 11 upgrade then goes through cleanly via Windows Update.
You have a MacBook (Intel, M1, M2, M3, or M4)
Apple Silicon MacBooks cannot run Windows 11 natively — the ARM architecture and lack of a supported Boot Camp path mean the only real option is a virtual machine (Parallels Desktop is the smoothest; VMware Fusion is a free alternative). Parallels can run Windows 11 ARM64 well enough for Office, Chrome, and most business apps; it is not suitable for x86 games or older 32-bit software. Intel Macs (2013–2019) can dual-boot Windows 10 with Boot Camp but are excluded from Windows 11's supported hardware list.
Your CPU shows Ryzen 5 2500U, 3500U, 4500U, 5500U, or newer
All Ryzen 2000 mobile and newer are on Microsoft's supported list. Common HP Envy, IdeaPad, and Aspire units from 2019–2023 running these chips upgrade cleanly. Only Ryzen 1000 (original Zen, 2017 launch) is excluded — rare on Pakistan's used laptop market anyway.
How Windows 11 differs from Windows 10 in practice
On a supported laptop, Windows 11 is a sensible move for everyday Pakistani office and study use: window snapping and virtual desktops are a real productivity gain for multi-monitor or two-app work, and it is the version that keeps receiving mainstream security updates. It is not materially faster for CPU-bound work like video encoding or heavy compilation, so do not upgrade a supported laptop expecting a speed jump.
If your laptop already supports Windows 11, upgrade soon, because Windows 10 no longer gets regular security fixes. If it does not, weigh the cost of a newer used laptop against the risk of staying on an unsupported setup.
How to use the Windows 11 compatibility checker

Find your processor
Press the Windows key plus R, type msinfo32 and press Enter. Read the Processor line, for example Intel Core i5-8350U. The first digit or two after the dash is the generation: 8350 is 8th gen, 1135 is 11th gen.

Pick your CPU generation in the tool
Choose the matching Intel or Ryzen generation from the list. If you do not know it, pick I don't know and the tool explains how to find it.

Enter RAM and storage
Type the RAM in GB and the storage size in GB. Windows 11 needs at least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, and 8 GB with a 256 GB SSD is the comfortable level.

Say whether TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are on
Press Windows key plus R and run tpm.msc to see the TPM state. In msinfo32, Secure Boot State shows On or Off. Choose unknown if you cannot check.

Read the verdict and fix the blockers
The tool says yes or no and lists every blocker. Most TPM and Secure Boot blockers are only BIOS switches (Intel PTT or AMD fTPM, and Secure Boot) and cost nothing to fix.

Can my laptop run Windows 11?
Check four things: an Intel Core 8th generation or newer processor (or Ryzen 2000 or newer), TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, and at least 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of storage. The tool above checks all of them. If the processor is older, Windows Update will refuse the upgrade, but a laptop that fails only on TPM or Secure Boot can usually be fixed in the BIOS.
Does a 7th gen Intel laptop like the ThinkPad T470 support Windows 11?
Not officially. Intel 7th generation (Kaby Lake) is below Microsoft's cut-off, so Windows Update will not offer Windows 11. You can force-install it with a registry or installer bypass and it usually runs, but Microsoft does not promise updates for unsupported hardware. If you need Windows 11 for work or study, buy an 8th generation or newer laptop instead.
How do I check my CPU generation?
Press the Windows key plus R, type msinfo32 and press Enter. Look at the Processor line. For Intel, the digits after the dash tell the generation: i5-7200U is 7th gen, i5-8250U is 8th gen, i5-1135G7 is 11th gen. For AMD Ryzen, the first digit of the model number is the series: Ryzen 5 3500U is the 3000 series.
How do I enable TPM 2.0?
Restart and open the BIOS, usually with F2, F10, F12 or Delete. On Intel laptops look for Intel PTT or Platform Trust Technology. On AMD laptops look for fTPM. Turn it on, save and exit. Then press Windows key plus R, run tpm.msc and check it says the TPM is ready for use. No chip needs to be bought for most 8th generation and newer laptops.
What is Secure Boot and do I need it?
Secure Boot is a BIOS option that only lets trusted software start the laptop. Windows 11 requires the laptop to be capable of it, and the setting is usually under Boot or Security in the BIOS. Some refurbished laptops arrive with it switched off or in legacy mode, so check it before you buy. It also needs the disk to use GPT, not the old MBR layout.
What are the minimum Windows 11 requirements?
Microsoft's minimum is a compatible 64-bit processor with 2 or more cores at 1 GHz or faster, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and a display larger than 9 inches. In practice, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD make Windows 11 comfortable on a used laptop.
Can a MacBook run Windows 11?
Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 and newer) cannot run Windows 11 natively. You can run the ARM version of Windows 11 in a virtual machine such as Parallels Desktop, which is fine for Office and browsers but not for most x86 games. Older Intel MacBooks are not on the supported hardware list for Windows 11.
Is it safe to buy a 7th gen used laptop in 2026?
It is safe to use if you only need a basic laptop and accept that Windows 10 is out of mainstream support, so security fixes depend on paid extended updates. It is a poor buy if you need Windows 11 or want the laptop to last several more years. A 7th gen model should be priced lower than an 8th gen one. Check this with the Laptop Price Checker.
Will Windows 11 slow down my old laptop?
On a supported laptop with an SSD, Windows 11 feels similar to Windows 10. With 4 GB of RAM or a hard disk it feels slow. If your laptop has 4 GB and a free slot, a RAM upgrade is the cheapest speed-up. The Upgrade Advisor shows what fits your model.
